JOB TITLE: 

Parents as Teachers Educator

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrate ability to work with young children and their parents.
  • Must hold one of the following:
    • Certification in Early Childhood or related field; 
    • Associate degree in Early Childhood or other related fields; 
    • Sixty college hours and two years of successful supervised experience in a program working with young children and their parents; or 
    • Five years of successful experience in a program working with young children and their parents.

 

REPORTS TO:

Early Childhood Coordinator and Director of Student Services

 

JOB GOAL:

To provide parents of children from before birth to age 5, the information and support they need to give their children the best possible start in life.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Successfully complete the requirements of the Parents as Teachers Training Institute.
  2. Recruit parents of infants and pre-school children and advertise screening opportunities.
  3. Observe and play with the child to obtain information relating to the child's mental and physical development.  Evaluate the child's responses to determine levels of child's physical and mental development.
  4. Confer with parents and provide timely information on child's development.  Determine parent's ability to comprehend information and observe his/her own child.  Develop individual plans for parents to implement at home.  Increase parent confidence in child-rearing activities by providing in-home training.
  5. Instruct parents individually or in groups.
  6. Organize groups of parents in similar situations. 
  7. Consult and coordinate plans with other professionals.
  8. Develop learning activities for parents and children.
  9. Facilitate screening efforts for children from birth to kindergarten age to identify possible delays, physical problems, or advanced abilities.  Refer to outside agencies children with developmental problems as needed.
  10. Assist with the kindergarten screening program.
  11. Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records.
  12. Assume such other duties as assigned by supervisor or administrative personnel.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary, work day, and year to be established by the Board of Education.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education of Education's policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
